Are you worried your pet has fleas? If your cat or dog seems to be scratching a lot, it’s very possible they have fleas living in their fur. Pets track these tiny blood suckers inside your property which increases your chance of a flea infestation. Researchers estimate that once you see a single flea on your cat or dog, there may be as many as 100 immature fleas infesting your property. SIGNS OF AN INFESTATION

FLEAS IN FUR

Since fleas are most likely to infest a pet, such as a dog or cat, the first sign is finding fleas in their fur. They usually look like little black dots on their skin and in the fur around their necks and tails, on their belly, and in their “armpits.”

PETS SCRATCHING

Pets with a flea infestation in their fur may scratch excessively. Sometimes, pets scratch so much that they make themselves bleed.

SIGHTINGS

Though more unusually, you’ll know if you have a flea infestation if you see actual fleas jumping around inside your house, usually on carpet, couches, or other furniture.

UNDERSTANDING FLEAS

GET THEM, BEFORE THEY GET YOU!

  • Pets typically pick up fleas before we notice them inside the house. The time pets spend outside interacting with the environment and other animals makes them much more susceptible.
  • These blood sucking insects are around 1-2 millimeters long and may look like a dark speck. If you comb your pet with a flea comb and see dark bugs inside it, you’ll know fleas are present.
  • Unfortunately, once you see fleas, they’ve probably already started laying eggs, and those eggs mature quickly. In most cases, flea pupae only take two weeks to progress from egg to adult.
  • Once they mature, they carry dangerous diseases such as:
    Tularemia
    Flea-borne Typhus
    Tungiansis
  • Because of these diseases, it’s important to diligently prevent fleas before they have the opportunity to lay eggs on your property.

FLEA PREVENTION TIPS

Keep grass around the house short and keep the yard free of branches, leaves, and debris.

Avoid walking your pet through wooded areas, especially those with tall grass, and check your pet for fleas after walks.

Ask your vet about preventative pet flea treatments.

Vacuum regularly, if your pet has fleas they will try to get them off and they may end up in your carpets.

Clean pet beds and kennels regularly.
